Ideas for activities the remainder of this year

Everyone seemed to have a good time with the more "informal" nature of our trivia contest/race last weekend. We also had the best participation in a long time (15 boats). I'm thinking of doing a similar fun event on August 2. Ideas include: a watermelon race (something our old sailing club in Oklahoma did each year) or a fishing tournament (one of my kid's idea). I'd appreciate any input anyone might have on something that would be fun for the club in general.

We'll probably keep the September Diabetes Regatta as a distance race.

I hope everyone is able to get out on the water this weekend.

July 4, 2009 - RACE

Wow, I just got word what Ross has planned for the race. It sounds like so much fun. Here is what he has planned:

"Just for fun, this July 4 we are planning an informal event to test your knowledge of Milford Lake as well as your sailing skills. At 1:00 sharp, under the shelter, we will hand out a list of Milford Lake trivia questions that can only be answered by making observations from your boat on the water. The challenge will be to sail around the lake to answer as many of the questions as you can before the race ends at 4:00. The team with the most correct answers wins. If there is a tie, the boat who turns in their answers the soonest will be the winner. Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers. In honor of the Independence Day Holiday, boats displaying an American Flag will be awarded bonus points. It should be a great time--bring family, friends, a Milford Lake map, a GPS unit (not absolutely necessary), and a cooler full of your favorite beverages. "

This just sounds like so much fun. I think we should coordinate our efforts, get some great teams lined up, and really have some fun with this.

Happy sailing. -- Donna

July 4, 2009 - Race and Social

Looks like the July 4 weekend is going to be a great time. The club has planned another race. Hopefully we will have wind this time. I will update the race information when I know more. Following the race we are planning our 2nd catered event of the season. This is going to be a fun one and the food will be amazing. Put on your grass skirts and coconut bras and hula with us for a fun luau. We are going to try to get Jim Waters to get the margarita machine again for us. Be sure thank him. Wasn't that super fantastic last time? Woot! Dinner at 6 p.m.

"Jo Beth's Annual Family Fun Day" is scheduled for July 5 (Sunday) starting around 3:30 p.m. We will have the pavilion pretty full with many of our friends and their families so hopefully we don't scare anyone off. Come join us for fun activities, dinner and birthday cake. Jo Beth will be 6 years old that day.

We took the boat out today and it was a perfect day. We threw up the black sail. I just love that thing. Marc and Andrea took out the darling Knotty. Friends Clint and Shawnee joined the fun. I am reminded how blessed Mark and I are to enjoy such relaxing and wonderful times together at beautiful Milford Lake.

Blessing to all.

Race on Sunday May 24

Memorial Race - Sunday, May 24, 2009
Skipper's meeting at 1:00 p.m. at the Shelter.
Start time 2:00 p.m.

Ross is planning on using a different scoring system to make the races a little more competitive; he will provide more details at the time of the race.

For anyone who is looking for crew or looking for a boat to crew on, just post a reply here. If you are new to racing, crewing a boat is a great way to learn. For those who are ready to race, I know Mark is always looking for crew; however, he has a wedding on the 24th so he wont be racing or attending the social.

If anyone wants to help decorate for the social, let me know.

Happy sailing!

SPRING CLEAN UP - APRIL 25, 2009

All members should have received their bills, annual brochure and the social committee's letter by now. I am really anxious to hear how everyone likes the new site and this blog. This has been been really good for my ego! Thanks to all the great comments I've gotten so far.

I am so looking forward to seeing everyone out helping at the Clean Up day on April 25. Don't forget to bring work gloves, tools, garden tools, and such to help. Plan on lots of hard work but its always worth the effort. Mark and I plan on being there this year to help.

Mark has many many weddings planned this summer so we'll miss lots of Saturdays at the Lake but hopefully we can get some good Sundays sailing in. See ya'll real soon! -- Donna

As I write this, the snow is falling really hard, and I can't believe that Lise and I actually were thinking of launching our boat earlier this week (before the storm hit).  Surely spring can't be far off!

Have you heard that Bill sold Rush Creek Marina over the winter?  He's apparently going to be around for a while, but the new owners will be taking charge soon.  I tried to call him this past week to get the details, but wasn't able to connect.

SYC Has a Blog

Ok, I really don't know what I'm doing. I've now officially set up the website which was quite simple. But... this blogging has been interesting. I've officially deleted the blog and re-created it three times now.

The intention is to make this blog a simple way to communicate with other members and interested sailors about whats going on in the yacht club; what members are doing; get advise about sailing or racing; and pretty much whatever anyone whats to talk about.

So here we go. Start blogging!
